Nobody Blogs Anymore

One of the interesting things about the shift from blogs to social media is how hard it is to find and learn from others – I know, but social media is information overload and so often the topics that dominate the feed have been meticulously curated and crafted to be there.

It makes it hard to read the stories of peoples experiences when you need them.

That might be the point to flag – when I’m ready to learn about something, I have to now search for that educator, influencer, or non profit using social media’s lukewarm search tools.

As a millennial at heart, my preference is to Google things when I want an answer.

I find myself scrolling the Reddit forums more often trying to learn and read from the experiences of others. Reddit forums, Quora, and maybe Facebook Groups being the most reliable and easiest way to connect and read from others – but they still are spaces where people answer questions.

I miss just telling my answers.

The other day, as I poured my heart into a well curated Instagram post, I thought – it’s time to consider blogging again.

I’ve almost always had a blog, somewhere to share thoughts on the internet. I was never good at having a diary, probably because my head thinks faster than my hands can scribble across a page. But I do love me a good blog post – even in a world where the authenticity and transparency shared on the internet puts you at risk for all sorts of demise. There’s something comforting about hitting publish.

I faded away from blogging when social media began to take over and it became obvious that while blogging could make you money, not without the fame of social media. I never achieved the fame I sought, but perhaps that’s why – I was trying to hard in a world dominated by pretty thin white girls with make up routines and hair they styled. I, a fat, with glasses, acne, and zero desire to try to achieve perfection in the chaos of my day to day.

There was an era where they said microblogging would make a comeback.

I think it has, and there is a place for microblogging on social media – but I find myself still in perils with having to find a picture to go along with the post. I don’t always want to analyze a photo, upload a photo. Sometimes, I just want to write the words and thoughts that come into my head.

This blog I monetized for many years. I worked my ass of trying to make that happen. Algorithms and search habits changed and the blog sank back to the bottom. I’m okay with that. I don’t want to write for others, I want to write for myself – and perhaps breaking away from social media will give me that peace.

I’m not the greatest writer, nor do I claim to be.

I write not to impress, but to make sense of the thoughts inside my head.

There is much to share over the coming weeks and month – that is if this becomes a regular hobby again and not just a dream I think I have. My life feels more different than ever before as I navigate my own Autism, PMDD, and business ownership. Each

Today, I did something I never imagined doing – I had a settlement conference following a small claims suit I made earlier this year. I filed for financial compensation following negligence of bookkeeping services that I hired out for almost 18 months.  The thing about small claims court is they really want you to nail […]

Prince George, BC | My Rhododendron Died

I’m from BC’s southwest coast, rhododendrons grow everywhere. They are the hedge plant of everything, but in Prince George, BC you will be hard pressed to find a rhododendron because they are just not zone 3 plants.  When we purchased our current home we were surprised to discover a rhododendron – but there was much […]
