Babian Blends Cloth Diaper Review

Another fantastic diaper order from Jemma + Way featuring Babian’s Blends. In 2020, I had the pleasure of chatting with Val to share her stories on the Cloth Diaper Podcast and why she designed this diaper the way it is. You should definitely check out the show, and all the other episodes of the Cloth Diaper Podcast because these brands stories give life to cloth diapers. Now you know why it is the way it is and that really can help understand the value of our industry.

I purchase this diaper.

About Babian Blends

Babian Blends is a US-based cloth diaper brand designed by Val and manufactured overseas. This brand is committed to simple diapering – no need to know all the terms here, we’ve got a diaper that just does you need it to do. It’s a easy and anxiety free experience.

Babian Blends Cloth Diaper Cover

The Babian Blends Cloth Diaper is a truly simple design featuring a one size cloth diaper cover that fits from newborns to toddlers. It has 3×4 rise setting with a double waist snap and cross over snap.

It features a double PUL to give you that durability, easy-to-wipe, and perfect for reusing design. Many cloth diaper covers are made with just one layer of PUL, but a double layer like in this cover and the Shine Cloth Diaper cover really amplifies and improves the diaper giving you more life out of the product and a better wetness barriers.

This is also a narrow crotch cloth diaper, much like the diapers we’ve been reviewing this month, this diaper features a narrow crotch to give you a trim fit against babies body. Think the Smart Bottoms Dream Diaper or the GroVia AIO. However, unlike the Australian and New Zealand diapers we reviewed, this diaper is a full one size length giving you a lot of room for diapering babies.

It has a snap in at the back to allow you to snap in inserts. You do get an insert of your choice, and I believe I have the 5-layer bamboo & cotton insert with a gusseted design. The snap is located on the tag of the insert (interesting placement), but the insert has washed up lovely, and continues to be a beautiful product. I’ll have some absorbency details and more in the coming months along a video.

This is a diaper shell or cloth diaper cover. You can purchase additional inserts and reuse this shell upwards 3-4 times per day, or until soiled. Cloth diaper cover systems are fantastic because of their reuse and the simplicity of that. Simply take out the insert add a new one with every diaper change. You can also snap in the insert and have a package for nervous caregivers. Everything is where it needs to be.

Review of the Babian Blends System

The narrow crotch concerns me with a cloth diaper cover just because I like a little more girth and width. I want full coverage to ensure that I don’t get any leaks. In my experience, narrow crotch diapers can be quite tricky for new parents. While it doesn’t leave you wondering where gussets and all go, it does mean you really need to get that elastic up tight into the leg crease and ensure you use the rise settings for the best possible fit.

I love the elastic design of the insert creating a ruffled channel This is something we see with GroVia’s snap-in inserts. To me this is a different design, it’s not backed in PUL, and it doesn’t have the gussets. It’s just an elastic sewn into the sides.

The snap is on the tag… which is a weird place to have a snap, and doesn’t seem useful…. I’m worried the tag will rip and the snap wont work. The snap therefore doesn’t really hold the insert down into the diaper like we might expect with other snap in systems like the Buttons Diapering System.

Recommendation

I think this is a fantastic diaper choice for a new parent curious about cloth diapering – the cover system with inserts is incredibly versatile, you get a wide array of sizing, and you can keep your costs down by opting for a 3 inserts to every cover ratio.

The natural fibre inserts are wonderfully made, and if we ignore the tag snap, it’s a great choice for parents to add into their diapers. That said, not all diapers work for all people Even if I had a baby in diapers, my experience would not be your experience. This is just a pretty blog with thoughts and pictures.

Purchase direct through Babian Blends or with Jemma & Way
