Bummi’s All In One Review

This post contains affiliate links.
Updated: March 15, 2015 after using the Bummi’s AIO on my newborn.

I’m a huge fan of simple, easy cloth diapering. And one of those strategies is embracing the All In One (AIO). Wash, wear, and repeat. No assembly required. So, when Bummi’s announced the release of an AIO, I had to give it a try. I pre-ordered the Bummi’s All In One earlier this year, and even picked up a second this summer.

We’ve been washing and wearing the Bummi’s AIO for several months now. I wrote an initial blog post about the diaper prior to the summer, and neglected to publish it. Today, I bring to you an updated revision with some honest truths about this all-in-one cloth diaper from months of love. (and some snazzy new photos of my toddler)

I love buying from Bummi’s because I love supporting Canadian Company’s. Bummi’s is a Canadian owned and operated company sourcing as many of their fabrics, and supplies from North American sources. They further manufacture their product just outside of Montreal.

[[I’m no strange to Bummi’s. Their organic cotton prefolds are a staple to my stash and one of my favourite cloth diaper essentials ]]

Bummi’s All In One Design

The Bummi’s All In One is a simple all in one style diaper. This means that there is no need to add absorbency, there is no stuffing, or matching, or adding. You grab and go.

The diaper features Bummi’s classic dimple style organic cotton. It has three sets of absorbency. The first being a tongue that can be folded into the pocket or laid on top for a stay dry function. Then there is a layer of cotton absorbency forming the pocket, and another thin layer inside the pocket (in a loop shape, like you might see on an Elemental).

Bummi’s does advertise the diaper is suitable starting at 5lbs to a 35+.  With a  4X2 snap design the diaper snaps down pretty small, and at 27lbs we are still snapped down a rise setting for my chunky monkey.

Another interesting part of the Bummi’s diaper is the alternating female/male snaps on the front of the diaper. I’m not so sure why this is, and would love to know. It doesn’t impact anything. Just caught this mama’s eye when using the diaper.

What I Love

There are a few key features to love about the Bummi’s AIO cloth diaper, some of them might take you by surprise considering the typical reputation of an AIO.

  • Absorbency – the Bummi’s All In One diaper is mighty absorbent. I am continually impressed with the absorbency of this diaper. It has successfully mastered naps, and with a simple booster, the Bummi’s AIO lasts the entire night for my moderate wetter.
I believe this to be THE MOST absorbent AIO in my stash (aside from diapers marketed for night time use). My simple absorbency measuring skills suggest it maxes out at 12oz, most AIO average out at about 8-10 oz.

    • UPDATE: This is seriously awesome for newborns who thrive on a liquid diet. The liquid diet really lends itself to being a heavy wetter. And while she can out pee all of her newborns, I doubt she can out pee this diaper.
  • Pocket Function – The perk of a pocket on an AIO is you can easily booster the diaper for additional absorbency. I also love a pocket-style AIO because it makes dumping poop easier.
  • Optional Stay Dry Tongue – Not all babies need or want a stay dry option, but with the Bummi’s AIO you can pull out the diaper tongue and provide sensitive littles with a stay dry feature.
  • 4 Rise Settings – optimal sizing options! It’s a generous fitting cloth diaper with LOTS OF ROOM TO GROW. This diaper is rated from 8-35lbs and will have tons of room to grow at 27lbs.
    • UPDATE: It’s even an amazing fit on my itty bitty tiny newborn! I’m totally flabbergasted at how much I loved the fit. Honestly, I swore it would never fit a tiny baby, but it does. It’s tight around the legs, and perfect on the waist (she’s about 9lbs, 21″ at 2 weeks). I thought it would be overly bulky but I can still snap up her 3 month sleeper.

What’s Not to Love

Here’s some nitty gritty concerns I have with the Bummi’s AIO. Some of these are serious, and some of these are just tricks I learnt to get a better experience with my second.

  • Bulk – I find this diaper relatively bulky compared to almost anything else in my stash. It was definitely bulky when he was smaller, and does improve as he’s become a chunkier baby.
    • UPDATE: On my newborn I find the bulk is mostly down, but on my toddler, I find the bulk is mostly in the front/crotch section. Despite its bulk, it still fits.
  • Double Rise Snaps – I find the diaper is prone to the dreaded cloth diaper bulge because of the double rise snaps. A set of three snaps along the rise settings would keep the diaper from bulging
  • Wicking – I struggled with wicking at the front of the diaper when Walter was smaller. Maybe I wasn’t getting the right fit, but I’m gonna be honest with you about this struggle. I problem solved a little but bulking up the absorbency at the front the diaper (folding up the tongue), but I occasionally still get wicking thru the wings and along the front of the diaper.

UPDATE: I’ve concluded that many of my wicking problems associated with the Bummi’s AIO is because I have a boy, and little boys wet much higher up in the front than little girls. When I use this diaper on my little girl, I never have the same problems.

  • Double Rise Snaps – I find the diaper is prone to the dreaded cloth diaper bulge because of the double rise snaps. A set of three snaps along the rise settings would keep the diaper from bulging
  • Curling Back Wings – the back wings of the diaper tend to curl up. If you spray your diapers, you’ll find the springy diaper elastic creates a little pool to collect the poop you’re trying to get rid of. this is my least favourite diaper to spray clean.

  • Takes FOREVER to dry – the easy hack is to turn the diaper inside out when tossing in the dryer, but because this diaper is super absorbent, I often find the insides damp at the end of a dry cycle.
  • Wash it, Wash it, Wash it. For the most part, you really don’t need to prep diapers, but the Bummi’s All In One Diaper is an exception. The more this diaper washes and wears the softer the dimple organic cotton gets. The softer the cotton the better and easier fit, and it does get increasingly absorbent.

The Final Word

I love owning a Bummi’s All In One because I love options and versatility. This is currently part of my night time routines stuffed with a Peachy Baby Bamboo insert. The fit can take a little time, but be patient with this diaper. If you continue to love it, and wear it, it will love you back.

I would RECOMMEND a Bummi’s All in One Diaper if you are looking for a super absorbent  All in One Diaper that can easily be boosted for more absorbency and you don’t mind a little bulk. The pocket function makes it perfect for those who want a little of both worlds. Update: I’d also recommend the diaper if your looking for a diaper that truly fits from 8lbs and up!
