The modern cloth diaper.
Many bloggers, vloggers, and cloth brands have started to embrace this term “modern cloth diaper” over the past few years in a way to shift the conversation from what was to what is. In some parts of the world, Australia and New Zealand, the term “MCN” or “Modern Cloth Nappy” is heavily embraced.
The modern cloth diaper is not your grandma’s cloth diapers. It’s not even your parents’ cloth diaper. While traditional diaper styles are still available and loved by many, modern approaches to cloth diapering have tackled all the things that just didn’t work out.

My mother-in-law always shares a store of diapering the twin boys with rubber pants, and how miserable they were to pull on and off. That’s right – rubber pants. My understanding is that at some point in the late twentieth century, the rubber pant was embraced as a waterproof cloth diaper cover. But rubber is far from breathable and was not an enjoyable material to work with.
That’s where the modern cloth diaper takes over, and swaps rubber for more breathable materials like Polyurethane Laminate. PUL is a laminated material. Today, most PUL is made through the thermal process known as TPU. All TPU is PUL, but not all PUL is TPU.
These modern cloth diaper styles feature new breathable material, along with new designs and cuts that can help provide us with the best possible experience.

Very similar to your experience with a disposable diaper, modern cloth diapers feature a classic hour glass shape. They are mostly available in one size fits most with adjustable sizing, with sized variations available. The most common sized variations include newborn diapers, toddler and plus sizes, as well as a size 1 & 2 system.

The modern cloth diaper uses fasteners, most commonly snaps and sometimes hook & loop, to secure the diaper to baby around the waste. Elastics sewn into the leg crease, and back, contain all the mess into the diaper. And absorbent material, most commonly known as inserts, absorb the yuck.
