Sometime last year, I had the pleasure of chatting with co-owner of Esembly Baby, Liz on the Cloth Diaper Podcast for Show 63. This was a fantastic opportunity to get to learn about this new up and coming cloth diaper brand that is making waves through it’s innovative marketing and impactful design.
I had to get a hold of it and find out what the deal was. Sometimes, I can listen and read the product page a dozen times, but I still dont know what I’m looking at. I don’t have a baby to sample this on, and I don’t have a tester that fits the size I ordered – I picked up the Esembly Baby Size 1 Trial Kit from Chapters | Indigo in Canada. If you are in the United States, order Direct.
this post does use affiliate links – I did purchase the product out of my own pocket and all thoughts are my own.
I hope to give you some insights to help you decide if this is a good choice for you. If you’re looking for more resources to learn how to cloth diaper, I have written a book on cloth diapering and I have a cloth diaper quiz to point you in the right direction for the style of diaper that might work best for your family.
About Esembly Baby
This is a cloth diaper designed in the United States from the people who brought you Diaper Kind, a cloth diaper service that serves New York. After years of providing diapers to families, they’ve branched and crafted a product based on that experience as a service and cloth diaper educator.
The Esembly Baby System
There are five plus different styles of cloth diapers, the Esembly Baby diaper is a fitted cloth diaper with a cloth diaper cover that is sold in a two size system. Don’t be scared, this system looks old fashioned and complicated but at the heart, this is one of the easiest styles of cloth diapers. Over the past few months, every time someone asks me how to cloth diaper a newborn… I say you should try an Esembly Baby Size 1 Kit. If I was to diaper all over again, it would be with this system (and a few others like wool, and Lilly & Frank)
A fitted cloth diaper is an absorbent diaper style that fastens around the body and needs a waterproof cover to not leak. It’s a two step diapering system (most cloth diapers are two steps in some regards). Fitted diapers are sought out as a more user friendly version of a prefold diaper or flat diaper – they are often considered for heavy wetters and nighttime diapering, but this specific diaper is designed for more general daytime use.
Honestly – every time I have to describe a fitted cloth diaper, I stumble over my words because it’s intuitively easy but incredibly difficult to put into descriptors. When you see the picture below, you might have a better understanding of what I’m trying to ramble over.
The diaper is paired with a cloth diaper cover which is used to keep the entire system waterproof. You place the fitted diaper on baby, then the cover, and you are already to rock and roll for the day. This type of system allows you to change just the soiled part – the fitted diaper, and replace the cover every 3-4 changes (or when soiled).
A sized diaper is a diaper that fits for a limited weight range – this specific diaper offers a 7-17lb weight range. This is different than more standard one size diapers which are adjustable from 8-35lbs. This diaper does not have any rise settings and as such it maybe bulkier on smaller babies and snugger on bigger babies – but if it fits, it works.
Sized diapers are great choice for families looking for a trim adaptable diaper that works from birth to toddlerhood. Purchasing two sets of diaper sizes feels extra expensive but because of the 3:1 ratio, and not needing to purchase newborn or toddler diapers, the cost can equal out for many families. Also if you’re coming to the game late in life, you just need the size 2. It’s more awesome than we give it credit. The Thirsties Duo system is another popular two size system.
3 Awesome Things About Esembly Baby
These are the three things about this diaper I want you to notice and recognize as intuitively well built and designed for your needs as a cloth diaper parent. I haven’t used this diaper, but this is why you might love it. — so many of my followers on Instagram are smitten with this system and it’s absolutely supportive and phenomenal team behind the brand.
1. Designed for Easy Laundering
When I say Fitted cloth diaper, you might immediately think of the negatives: bulky, difficult to clean, and hard to dry. And yes, many fitted cloth diapers take forever to try, are incredibly bulky, and can be difficult to wash. Fitted cloth makers like Lilly & Frank reviewed earlier this year, often combat that by offering snap in inserts to help reduce the drying time and improve washing.
But Esembly is one easy system without any snaps, it’s the all in one of the fitted diaper world. This diaper has a sewn in inserts featuring these really cool tunnels? This helps ensure that the absorbent material can easily agitate out anything and also ensures a quicker dry time.
2. Sized System
There is so much beauty in a sized cloth diapering system that is hard to really articulate and understand. If you’re a first time parent, it can be easy to brush off sized diapering systems because… its two entirely different stashes of diapers.
But, for many of us who have been cloth diapering forever, the sized diapering system is a fantastic way to give a more custom fit to baby throughout their lifespan. A sized diapering system replaces a lot of the finicky ness that a one size system offers. Now you don’t need newborn diapers or larger fitting toddler diapers. You have one set of diapers for birth to about 15lbs, and another set for babyhood.
Yes, it does seems extra, but man it’s totally worth it. So many diapers are marketed as one size diapers but just fit small, or fit large, or fit at weird stages. Esembly Baby offering a sized system, they ensure that you know ahead of time that this diaper will fit and work for you during these two stages of life.
3. Brought to you by a long time Cloth Diaper Service
This is incredible because when I got to chat with Liz, I learnt about the passion that went into this product. Many cloth diaper brands are designed by passionate people, but what I find unique about this brand it’s approach is that it really goes to address many of the concerns new parents have, and offer solutions that work.
The Trial Kit, like the one I purchased, is a phenomenal starter kit. It offers three diaper changes, detergent, and a wet bag. This is a great way to see if you might like cloth diapering.
They also offer a good selection of extra accessories on their website including the agitator balls which I’ve heard are awesome for parents struggling with wash routines.
You might be a skeptic of cloth diaper brands manufacturing their own detergents, but I’ve heard great things, and it’s not just about what I’ve heard. Esembly baby worked closely with detergent specialists to formulate this to work for parents in their home. They use a custom detergent for their New York diaper service and ensured that you would have the same level of success. Don’t let other cloth diaper groups shame you because it’s just water softeners, this is a specially formulated product thats been crafted to work for some parents.
Try the Esembly Diaper System
The Esembly Diaper is a great choice for new parents to learn about fitted diapers and fall in love with the fitted diaper. It’s a unique cloth diapering system that is very basic, but also a little different. I think that is a fantastic day time diaper and Esembly Baby offers so much help and support that you really can get going and have a great experience with the product.
One of the biggest struggles I see is with leaks and fits. If this is happening, please reach out to their customer service team for 1:1 support. This is most likely caused because of the fit of the cover over the diaper.

I have been hoping to find a baby small enough for my diapers, but I have not yet found one.
Comparing the Esembly Baby System to other Daipers
I have a few other size one diapers in my stash, and have paired it with them. This reminds me most of the AMP system the most, I have it compared next to the size 1.
