I get it, childcare is limited and we are literally wrestling for spots – but as we create public policy and programming childcare access should be everyone, not just those who dream you worthy.
This week after school care allowed me to attend to a school district committee meeting.
Preschool programming allowed me to visit the dentist, doctor and basic care for my body.
Part time childcare let me upgrade my skills, network and find a career.
But to be honest, I don’t think you need a reason to access childcare because reasons are then judged and in our judgement comes bias of what’s perceived “good use of time” and that’s not cool.
Childcare should be for everyone.
It provides parents, primarily women, immense opportunities beyond those deemed worthy in our 40 hour a week capitalist agenda.
And tying it to income, only ties us to our partners. I carry debt from our years in childcare because my partner agreed we needed it despite it being more than my additional income. But not everyone is so lucky.
