Hemp Babies Doubler, Prefolds & Flats

These hemp inserts, hemp prefolds, and hemp flats from Hemp Babies are a seriously underrated hemp cloth diaper in the market. HempBabies products are hard to find and not popular, but they are exceptionally well made, and when I purchased them last year, I was in complete awe. Let me explain why Hemp Babies cloth diapers are exactly what you need.

PS Cotton Babies, can you choose a better name for these products, I can see this blog posted getter marketed as spam because of the taboo around hemp products, even though we’re just talking about the incredible textile.

Why Hemp?

Hemp is known as an absorbent material for cloth diapering, but it’s expensive and finicky. Hemp is always blended with another textile, often cotton, and is sought after because it holds onto liquids really well. Unlike, other textiles, hemp has a very low compression rate.

  • Check out my comparison of flats and prefolds

It’s not that hemp inserts will absorb MORE than bamboo or cotton, but it’ll hold onto the liquid really well. It’s a great addition to a diaper that is leaky and needs a slower absorbing booster on the bottom. It’s also a great performer for many kids during day or night.

Hemp is expensive, it’s more expensive than other fibres. Cheap hemp tends to be poorly knit and results in a lot of curling and stiffness.

Hemp Babies Diaper Doublers

Diaper Doublers, or inserts, actually more of doubler/booster are small absorbent inserts that you use to boost your cloth diaper stash.

Important things to know

  • available in two sizes (small and large)
    •  a little on the wide side, truthfully.
    • Could fold in lengthwise, would prefer if it was half an inch narrower.
  • two layers of 55% hemp, 45% certified organic cotton
    • incredibly thin and adaptable to most diapers
    • the large would be great folded in half and added where you need it.
      • an important thing about absorbency is sometimes you need to put the absorbency where you need it, not throughout the entire diaper. so fold and place it where baby pees most.
  • soft fleecy texture, with a little bit of waffle when washing.
  • Absorbency
    • Small: 3.5 oz
    • Large: 5.0 oz
  • starts at $4.98

What do I love?

I love how thin and soft these are. Unlike my knit GeffenBaby inserts, these are so thin and so soft, but I do wish they were a little trimmer. They are designed by the people who make Cotton Babies products – so they would fit incredibly well in a Flip diaper. I’ve also included a snap shot of them with a bumgenius Elemental.

These are just hemp boosters. 3.5 and 5 ounces is a nice ADDITION to your cloth diaper set up. I consider an average diaper to need about 8 ounces, and heavy wetters push the 10 oz limit during the day.

Hemp Babies Flat Weeds – Hemp Flats

I’ve tried one other hemp flat in the past – check out the review of the Humbird Hemp Flat – and in general it’s not my favourite choice because it’s a more expensive product and tends to not be as soft and cozy as say cotton or bamboo.

When I think flats, I think affordable – and yes the HempBabies is a mere $10.95, it’s not crazy budget like the Elemental Joy cotton flats.

Important things to know:

  • one size
  • single layer of 55% hemp and 45% cotton
  • before washing: 32.5 by 26.5
    • shrinks down to a square but still larger than my Imagine Baby and Humbird Stretchy Flats
  • knit jersey
  • Absorbency: 12.5 ounces
  • $10.95 USD

What do I love?

This product isn’t a fall in love product. It’s kinda rough and it’s not super soft, and it shrunk into a less than perfect square that drives me a little ehhhh, whyyyy mood.

It’s absorbent, and affordable at under $1 per ounce (we often see hemp at a $1.20 or so per ounce).  It works, and it would be an option for your child.

Hemp Babies Prefolds

Affectionately known as the Hemp Babies Little  and Hemp Babies Bigger (watch, I’m terrified to publish this post and get my entire blog boycotted because of those words, so I’ll skip it).

The Hemp Babies prefolds remind me of the Smart Bottoms Prefold. It’s a similar textile and texture, as well as offering the same incredible absorbency and functionality.

  • Check out the comparison of Smart Bottoms PRefold to the Geffen Baby PRefold

There is no right or wrong way to fold these hemp  prefolds. they can be folded on the long, or in thirds, or in half. Fold it to get the shape and size you need to fit baby best. I do think these are more of a modern prefold intended for folding and stuffing into your favourite pocket or cloth diaper cover. You could also add the smaller one to an all in one cloth diaper for more boost. Be creative and do what you need to get the absorbency you need to cloth diaper.

Things to know

  • available in two sizes, little and big
    • little is perfect for newborns and small babies
      • comparable to the AMP prefolds
    • Bigger is better for toddlers, and it’s a big hefty size
      • comparable to the large Smart Bottoms Prefold
      • I’ve compared it to a size 2 Thirsties Duo Prefold
  • 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton
  • soft fleece
  • two layers of material

Bigger = $12.95, 15.8 ounces

Little = $7.95 USD, 8 ounces

Things I like

I love the texture and absorbency these products offer. The small Smart Bottom prefold is a favourite of mine for newborn cloth diapering and I could see the Hemp Babies small prefold being an equal fan favourite. It’s like a little absorbent boost for newborn diapering and into toddler hood as a booster.

I love that both are only two layers of absorbency and dry really quick in the dryer. Yes, I dry everything in the dryer, and these products while they have some wiggle in them, they are fairly straight and don’t require any stretching and pulling to have a nice product.

My Recommendation

I think these are incredible hemp cloth diaper products that would make a worthy addition to your stash. They overcome many of the challenges of cheaper products while offering a soft and versatile addition to any cloth diaper stash. Because it’s nearly impossible to find this product – just stick with Geffen Baby, available directly or through your favourite cloth diaper retailers.
