The Smart Bottoms Prefold (Smartfold) and the Geffenbaby Prefold (Jersey) are too very smilier but very different products. We’re going to take a look at how the shape and material varies. Arguably, this is not the best comparison since Geffen Baby does also manufacture a fleece prefold, I just don’t have one. I only have the Jersey. The fleece prefold would be more comparable for texture, but while we are here we can take a closer look at that variable.

What is a Prefold?
A prefold is a larger rectangular material used with a cloth diaper for absorbency. It is smaller than a flat cloth diaper, but larger than inserts. It can be either folded in thirds or folded onto baby and used more like a fitted diaper. A prefold needs to have a cover to make it waterproof.
Some families will place folded prefolds into pocket cloth diapers or pair them with AIO cloth diapers. I’ve included a photo of the Smart Bottoms Smart Fold in a Too Smart Cover below as an example. But you can also visit the review of the Smart Bottoms Smart Fold and the Geffen Baby Prefold to see how it is folded onto baby.
Jersey Versus Fleece
Jersey material is a tighter more sturdy knit. It can be smooth but it’s also more prone to tears and holes. Fleece is a bit softer, but more prone to pills and wear. Both are natural fibre and both will shrink and stain. I try to use words but pictures are best to show the difference.
They are both about the same thickness, the material is different. Thick dress pant material versus sweat pant material. Both perform well because of the quality of the textile including the weave and composition. Geffen Baby is 60% hemp – the highest hemp ratio on the cloth diaper market; whereas Smart Bottoms is only 55% hemp.
Both materials are about the same thickness when trifled, but the Geffen Baby in my experience is a little bulkier. I find the knit less forgiving for distributing width.
Sizing & Absorbency Comparison
Geffen Baby is available in upwards of five sizes. I currently have the small (green) and the medium (purple). Pictured below is the small Geffen Baby compared to the medium Smart Bottoms. And the Medium Geffen Baby compared to the Large Smart Bottoms. The sizing is fairly similar. You’ll notice the Smart Bottoms is a wider more traditional shaped prefold (think Grovia or even Bummis Prefolds); whereas the Geffen Baby Prefold is a longer variation designed for folding onto baby.
Absorbency Numbers – For a full list of prefold absorbency numbers check out the cloth Diaper Podcast
- Small Smart Bottoms Prefold = approx 8.8 oz
- Small Geffen Baby Jersey Prefold = approx 10.5 oz
- Medium Smart Bottoms Prefold = approx 10 oz
- Large Geffen Baby Prefold = approx 13.8 oz
- Large Smart Bottoms Prefold = approx 15.3 oz
Absorbency is in fluid ounces and based off three tests using warm water and maximum absorption. Real life experiences of the product may vary and the numbers are best used to compare and gage the best product for your family.
Purchasing Recommendation
Personally, I prefer using the Smart Bottoms prefolds because I like the shape and functionality for tri folding.
I like Geffen Baby because of it’s reliable performance.
I hope this helps you understand the options and differences between the products.
