Let’s not sugar coat the experience, having 2 in cloth diapers is exhausting. I just rinsed my diapers for the third time this week because I left them in the washer (yet) AGAIN. Parenting two children is exhausting, diapers or not. The laundry from tiny people piles up quick, and so do the diapers.

Don’t get me wrong; I love cloth diapering. I might be doing diapers for days, but I much prefer it to garbage for days. And remembering to buy diapers or order them from Amazon.
When it comes to two in diapers life is no different than one in diapers. And yes, Little Man is potty curious, but I’m still doing laundry because accidents happen. The only difference is I have more diapers to wash, dry, and put away.
If you’re about to venture into the world of cloth diapering more than one baby, perhaps you have 2 in cloth diapers, then check out my three tips for success.
1. Be easy on yourself.
Cloth diapering is NOT all or nothing, but rather about finding what works for you and your family. I have taken breaks from cloth diapering. When the diaper laundry piles up, the chaos unfolds, and life becomes too much I pull out a package of disposable inserts and just take a break.
I would use disposable diapers, but that would mean going to the store and having the right size on hand. Disposable inserts are easier in this moment. One size for growing/ever changing babies, and always the perfect fit.
2. Stop folding Diapers.
Folding Cloth Diapers is exhausting. It adds an extra 20-30 minutes to an already limited day. Save yourself some time, stress, and worry and STOP FOLDING CLOTH DIAPERS. Just stack them neatly (or not so neat). Before I gave up on all-in-one cloth diapers, I would just stack them up flat. It’s okay, totally safe, and easy.
If you use natural fibre inserts (prefold diapers or flat diapers) STOP STUFFING (unless you have a wetness sensitivity) laying the insert on top of the pocket, or in the cove is 100X simpler than stuffing a diaper. I do not remember the last time I stuffed a diaper.
3. Buy More.
- Wet Bags. With 2 under 2 dirty cloth diapers AND dirty clothes accumulate like crazy. I’m not sure where it all comes from, but I NEEDED more wet bags to store the incredible volume of dirty diapers. Upstairs I use a series of rotating hanging wet bags, and downstairs I take advantage of an enormous Buttons Pail Liner for storing all the dirty diapers.
- Laundry Detergent. Between the mini scoop in the pre-wash, the full scoop in the main wash, and the rest of the laundry, we go thru laundry detergent like it is going out of style. I grab a box almost over time I go to Costco, so we don’t run out!
- Cloth Wipes. It’s never ending.
BONUS SPLURGE TIP for 2 in Cloth Diapers
Colour coded stashes for each kid! Should you be inclined and have access to the resources to have different stashes for each kid, it makes life a little simpler to have colour coded stashes.
For example, when we were using our all-in-one cloth diaper stash, all of Little Misses small snapped down diapers were girl prints and purple. Whereas, Little Man’s open snap diapers were boy prints and blue. This makes it easy for Simply Dad to do diaper changes and easy for exhausted mommies to mindlessly change diapers.
Simply Dad has since learned how to change rise settings and make a diaper fit.
Taking Questions.
Do you have a question about having 2 in cloth diapers? What is your biggest fear? What hesitations do you have about cloth diapering, multiple babies?
I needed blog post like this when I was starting to CD my first!!! 🙂 We’re starting to potty train our secnd, and I wouldn’t trade cloth diapers for the world- even on the stinky rough days. And we use disposable when we need to, too! No shame! lol
Color coding is definitely a fantastic idea! But I have 2 boys in cloth under 2, but at that point I guess cloth diapering 1 in prints and the other in solid colors would work just as easily. Thanks for the great post! It was quite helpful and useful!
Love love love! I have my 10 week old and 16 month old in cloth. I love every minute! I love the different stash ideas and recently did something similar. My 10 week old has all the prints and my toddler is in all solid diapers, which happen to be larger anyways. It helps (dad) so much.
I have people sympathetically say to me all the time, “You must be so busy with all your cloth. That is so much work!” NOPE. You know what is work and gross? Disposables! And while we use disposables at night and on weekends, I don’t like them. Love my cloth 10000 percent more.
Cheers to cloth diapers!
