Top 5 Diapers for Newborn to Toddler Cloth Diapers

This post was originally written in 2017 and republished in 2018. It does have affiliate links and products gifted but opinions are of my own accord. To learn more about cloth diapering visit https://www.clothdiaperpodcast.com/book/

— I know that most of these diapers are no longer available! The cloth diaper industry changes so much.

Maybe, after checking out my AIO newborn cloth diaper experience, you’ve decided newborn AIO cloth diapers isn’t the right choice for you. So now, you’ve got a couple of options and one of them is to check out the functionality of One Size (OS) cloth diapers for your newborn. While many OS cloth diapers make the promise of being suitable from birth to potty training, not all fulfill this promise. We used newborn cloth diapers easily until 10 pounds; around 10 pounds, newborn cloth diapers began to fit snugger, lack the necessary absorbency and begin to cause more frustrations than originally desired.

I rotated in one-sized cloth diapers at around 9 pounds, and while I did previously blog about my trials and errors with one-sized cloth diapers on my newborn, there are some One Size cloth diapers that just function better on a newborn than others.

These are my top 5 One Size Cloth diapers for a newborn (in alphabetical order): Bummi’s AIO, Easy Peasies Pocket, Funky Fluff OS, GroVia Shells, Sweet Pea Pocket.

Bummi’s AIO

I was completely flabbergasted that the Bummi’s AIO would be one of my top favourite diapers for my newborn. But, this diaper took me by surprise and quickly was rotated into Little Misses stash.

  • mighty absorbent.
  • doesn’t cross over, but 4 rise settings make it tiny.
  • kinda bulky, but trim fit in the leg creases makes up for it.

This diaper is a large fitting all-in-one and still nicely fits my growing 30 pound toddler and is absorbent enough for him.

Easy Peasies Pocket

The Easy Peasies Pocket is another great one size choice for newborn cloth diapering. This Canadian brand is undoubtingly a favourite for this blogger, and the pocket continues to impress.

  • Cross over snaps for a tiny fit waist, along with long wings for longitivtiy.
  • 4 rise settings shrinks it down, and grows it back up.

I’m not a fan of the Easy Peasies prefold for the little baby as I found it bulky and stiff. However, there are many other great absorbency options to consider – The Smart Bottoms Size Small Smart Fold was a great choice for any OS pocket on a newborn, folded up Flour Sak Towel (FST), or a daytime Flip insert.

Funky Fluff

Truly, this Canadian brand is an amazing diaper. If you wanted to go only one-size cloth diapers, the one size Funky Fluff would not disappoint.

  • Cross Over snaps give for a tiny waist.
  • Four rise settings and narrow crotch offer a trim overall fit.
  • Quality bamboo inserts (small and large) will meet growing absorbency needs.

GroVia Shells

GroVia shells are an awesome Newborn to Toddler Cloth Diapers. The Hook & Loop shell truly gives a great easy fitting diaper on an 8 pound baby. Easier to use than the GroVia, and a smoother, cleaner fit, I would cloth diaper from start to finish with GroVia Shells.

  • Cross Over gives the ultimate tiny fit.
  • 3 generous rise settings fit even fair sized toddlers.
  • Reusable shell diapers help keep your stash affordable.

8 pounds, 12 pounds, 30 pounds.

The one downside to GroVia H&L is that over time, I notice wear and love on my hook and loop strips. A few points to remember – keep them out of the dryer, and they can be replaced with snaps down the road. After a year some of my H&L looks loved, and not sure we’d make it to potty training – that and Little Man likes to take of velcro style diapers.

Sweet Pea Pocket

We’ve recently had our hands on a Sweet Pea Pocket to test for CozyBums and we love it! I would totally cloth diaper a newborn with one. It gives a nice fit, with an easy to stuff pocket, and it fits my toddler! I’m not a fan of microfibre inserts, but those can be replaced and updated as needed.

  • Double cross over snaps give a tight waist fit.
  • Generous sized bum and wings give great coverage on bigger tots.
  • Large pocket for stuffing any sized insert for ultimate absorbency needs.

Looking to boost your stash, Canadians can find most of these 5 diapers at CozyBums Diapers or Lagoon Baby. Bummis & Funky Fluff are also available at Well.ca.
