If you don’t know Nerdy Momma’s, you should. Check out show 4 on the Cloth Diaper Podcast for her story, and then give her a follow wherever you social media – Instagram, Facebook and even Tik Tok.
Anna is the wonderfully amazing woman behind Nerdy Momma’s and a few years ago I purchased her diapers with the intent of doing a review and then life got away from me. I did get to use these products on my babies before my cloth diaper days were done. There is real experience here.
But total disclaimer: pocket diapers are so not my thing. That’s okay, I’m mostly doing this blog post to show you some awesome pictures and comparisons of this product for you to make a decision. She also has an AMAZING AIO diaper – review coming soon.
The Nerdy Mommas Pocket Cloth Diaper
You have choices – I’m showing you both the one size (8-40pounds) and the Big Kid (24 – 55+ pounds) because they are one and the same. One is just bigger than the other. You’ll see the estimated weight ranges above – remember, weights are just estimates and provide a frame of reference of when this product might best fit, but not all children fall into those category based on their frame and weight distribution.
This is a pocket cloth diaper. A pocket cloth diaper is a diaper with an exterior waterproof layer and an interior layer that is usually stay dry. There is an opening located at the back between the two layers that allows you to place an insert (or other absorbent material) into the diaper. This creates a handy little package for use. Pocket cloth diapers are single use diapers – use, wash and repeat.
This diaper features a single back opening, simplistic design (not a bad thing), and four rise settings. It’s a triple waist snap with a low-hip waist snap (use to reduce wing droop or sag) and a cross over snap (for small bellies and folding up into a poop.
The one size pocket cloth diaper is $14.99 USD and sold with a single 4 layer insert (3 layers of bamboo terry cloth and 2 layers of cotton/bamboo woven blend. The Big Kid is $17.99 USD and sold with the same insert.
The Big Kid Diaper IS SO big I would recommend larger prefolds or flats. I found that inserts got lost in this pocket diaper and trying to make sure the insert was at the front for boys can be fishing in the dark. I used receiving blankets and size 3/4 GroVia or Osocozy Prefolds with my big kid.
Comparisons
The Big Kid diaper is definitely a big kid diaper. I’ve compared it to the Best Bottom Bigger and the Buttons Super diaper below. This diaper is significantly larger than both, and larger than my Snap Ez diaper.
I don’t have a lot of similar pocket cloth diapers to the Nerdy Mommas diaper. Most of my pockets are double waist snap and have different types of features and functions.
I have compared it here to the Nuggles Simplee. The Nuggles Simplee is one of my favourite pocket cloth diapers – but it is a higher priced product because of it’s double gusset, double open, and snap in inserts. This is a very similar shape but the fit is definitely different. I prefer the Simplee, but it’s higher priced product.
I’ve also compared it to a cheapie that I have that’s very similar in shape. Again, the shape is different. There are slightly different curves and tweaks that are unique to one product over the other. Nerdy Mommas feels in hand like a much better quality product than the cheapie despite it’s similarities. The micro fleece over the microsuede, as well as the quality and feel of the PUL varies between these two brands. You are paying for a custom print through a small business that is complaint and ships from the United States – and a few other things .
Recommendations
The Nerdy Mommas OS Pocket Cloth Diaper is a really classic pocket cloth diaper. If you’re looking for something with fun nerdy prints, simple to use style, and a little fit and flare, this is the diaper for you. Also, Nerdy Mommas is a great resource and support group to help you cloth diaper.
… my biggest pet peeve, and this applies to all diapers with this snap set up, is that I just don’t like how it doesn’t lie flat and it’s totally knit picky and it’s totally something that you can live with. It’s cosmetic and does not impact the functionality.
The Nerdy Mommas Big Kid Pocket Cloth Diaper is a nice large size and would not recommend it for kids under 20lbs. This is the diaper you need when you’re maxing out the one size diapers and moving into big kid territory. It is a nice big fitting pocket diaper that would give a comfortable fit without being tight or low, or chewing into the skin.
I really like using this diaper with my 3/4 year old as a night time solution. It was great to add a receiving blanket.
