It’s not really a thing, anymore.
The concept of prepping cloth diapers is antiquated.
Antiquated is a really big word.
And while there are cloth diapers that really need to be prepped, the vast majority of diapers just need to be washed once and good to go. Even if they “need to be prepped”let’s stop obsessing over the need to washing clot diapers a dozen times and just wash them once.
Hey guys, just letting you that occasionally I use affiliate links in my blog posts. Including this one. This means I earn a commission from these posts. Cheers.
How do I know if I need to Prep my Cloth Diapers?
If your cloth diaper is made of unbleached, unprocessed natural fibres then you need to prep your cloth diapers.
And even then, not all of those diapers need a rigorous prepping process of boiling, washing a dozen times, or other ridiculous rumours that go around. .
Forget boiling diapers on the stove, unless you have a Smart Bottoms cloth diaper (but even then, try this trick instead), just wash with your regular laundry.
No, the oils won’t transfer from the insert to other diapers. I’m not even sure where that myth came from, but if that was the case, then your cloth diaper wouldn’t be getting clean in the wash. A wash routine should remove all oils, dirt, and grossness from the articles in the washing machine. Anything other than that is just not a cleaning thing. And we need to talk about wash routine, or maybe not.

Wash Once & Go
Some natural fibre cloth diapers get better with age. Bummis AIO, Funky Fluff Inserts, Bummis Pure, GroVia Newborn, Elemental 3.0 are just a few off the top of my head which become more absorbent with washing. But by more absorbent, I mean an extra ounce or two after 4-5 washes.
Stop wasting time washing your cloth diapers 5-6-8 times, and just wash it once and wear it knowing with each wash, it’s just going to get better and more awesome. Give it a month, and if you still hate it, then maybe it’s not the right absorbency for you.
Seriously, any type of laundry wash will do.
I’m impatient, I’ll toss it in with blue jeans, towels, or whatever is in the machine. Truthfully, it probably gets washed with diapers because I’m always washing cloth diapers. That’s the life of in 2 in diapers.
That stash of microfibre inserts and PUL covers, it just needs one solid wash and you are good to go. Don’t stress it mama, cloth diapering is easy. You got his.
What about those prefold diapers?
or even fitted cloth diapers, maybe even flats.
I almost forgot that you totally do need to prep prefold cloth diapers, and toss them the dryer! Wash them once, and then follow that rule I mentioned above and let them get better with age. A toss in the dryer is critical thought because it lets them fluff up and get that awesome prefold cloth diapers look and function. Check out my favourite prefold cloth diapers.
Do you prep your diapers?
I do not. I want to save you the headache and get you straight into enjoying those beautiful cloth diapers. Skip the prep, just wash and start wearing that diaper. Why waste resources prepping diapers when it could catch a pee and do a job?
