Right now, my dirty cloth diaper situation is a little chaotic. We’ve been busy go-go going this summer hitting up playgrounds, and adventures within the local area and dirty diaper storage has been a little hectic. Dirty diapers EVERYWHERE and no logic. Between long days at the splash pad, and weekends hitting up birthday parties, most of our cloth diapering has been out and about. This means coming home with a full bag of dirty diapers (and often leaving it in the van because I just don’t have that many hands).

Laundry is on the first floor, but we live on the second floor. In my attempt to streamline life, I began to leave piles of full zippered wet bags downstairs in the laundry room (why bring up dirty diaper laundry for the bathroom wet bag, when laundry is downstairs?). This strategy is unsightly and unsavory. Leaving 3-4 wet/dirty diapers zippered into a wet bag on my laundry room floor just encourages stink. Dirty cloth diapers really need to exposure to the air to breathe and break down the stinks. It just makes cloth diaper laundry easier.
This is where Buttons Diapers comes in. Buttons Diapers also makes a diaper! Check it out here. Buttons Diapers sent forward a new dirty diaper storage system for me to try, and I love it! For the first time in 2 years, I have a diaper pail AND a hanging wet bag. This combo is the perfect solution for this busy family.
Dirty Diaper Storage Strategy
To prevent the pile up of wet bags in the laundry room, I started to use a diaper pail in my tiny/cluttered laundry room (please don’t judge my chaos, while I spend a ton of time here, it doesn’t receive the love it deserves). I found the largest pail I could at the local store (42 L – I wanted bigger, and could use bigger) and lined it with my Buttons Diapers Pail Liner.
My lined diaper pail now lives in my laundry room as a dirty diaper storage solution. When I get home from a busy day, I dump my wet bag into the bucket and head upstairs with the kids. No more stinky laundry room! No more clothes pinning my nose to open zippered wet bags that lingered on the floor. The open swing lid provides just the right amount of airflow to keep the stinkies away, and the pail liner is easy to toss in the wash when it gets dirty (keeping my pail nice and clean – much easier to clean a pail liner than the crevices of the pail).
I continue to use a hanging wet bag upstairs in my bathroom.
This has been my strategy since starting solids. Prior to solids, I hung the wet bag on my diaper change station using command hooks. The Buttons Diaper hanging wet bag is a wet/dry bag with handles. It’s smaller than my other wet bags, but this doesn’t bother me as the majority of my diapers are being stored downstairs anyway.
I keep a wet bag in my bathroom because poop needs to be dumped. My toddler’s diapers get sprayed or dumped into the toilet and then immediately disposed of in the Buttons Diapers hanging wet bag. (And soon, so will Little Misses diapers as she’s going to be starting solids in the next month or so). I don’t have any floor space to sacrifice in the bathroom. This means a hanging wet bag the perfect solution to dirty diaper storage solutions. At the end of the day, I ran the bag downstairs and dumped it into the pail.
This new dirty cloth diaper strategy was amazing. My husband was happy to have less dirty diapers lingering in the bathroom, and I was happy the bathroom smelled a little fresher. Even with an open wet bag to help oxidize the smell of dirty cloth diapers, there was still a lingering scent and moving my diapers to the laundry room every night really cut down on the bathroom odors.
Specifics on Buttons Diapers Wet Bags
We received 2 Buttons Diapers cloth diaper accessories: the wet bags. The first is the Buttons Diapers large Hanging wet/dry bag and the second being the Buttons Diapers pail liner.
The Buttons Diapers large hanging wet/dry bag is rather small in my opinion. It’s smaller than a comparable Planet wise bag, and holds only 12-15 dirty cloth diapers with the top open (That’s about a days worth of diapers in my house, and about 1/3 of a load of dirty diapers). It is made of PUL and features a second zippered pocket to allow you to store both clean and dirty diapers in the same bag without mixing. Price Tag: $13 USD.
Buttons Diapers says it fits 9 diapers with inserts to zipper close.
Will the bag leak with wet diapers? Most Likely. PUL is water resistant not water proof. I filled my diaper with soaking wet diapers and surprisingly it didn’t get moist or leak during the day. Buttons Diapers uses a rolled seam to keep this at minimal and I was overall impressed with how it held up compared to other wet bags I own.
I do wish the bag had snap handles because for me snap handles for the versatility it offers. I also wish this bag was bigger. It just holds all the diapers for one day. With 2 in diapers bigger is better. The pail liner described below helps me with that.
The Buttons Diapers pail liner is massive in comparison. It holds 50+ diapers. (Note: the images of the bag full is 50 cloth diapers). It is 26” tall by 16” wide and when full creates a nice stand-alone size. It fit well inside my 42L bucket, and I could likely get an even bigger pail and it would fit! Made of PUL it features a drawstring closure with toggles for tightening. Price Tag: $15USD.
Compared to other pail liners on the market, the Buttons Diaper Pail liner is a similar size. It appears to have a smaller width, but is relatively tall.

I have never had the guts to try cloth diapering but I love the organization and thought you put into this! My chaotic life would be sure to lead to dirty diapers lying on the laundry room floor as well!!

This looks like a great solution for any parents using cloth diapers – extremely practical for very busy and chaotic households. I know a couple who could definitely benefit from this and will send them a link to this post which I think should help a lot.

Wow, this makes me especially thankful that we live in a ranch-style townhome! I think I’m too lazy for two floors haha! This is really awesome though, I have never tried Buttons wet bags. I was planning on buying a travel size, but maybe I’ll toss a pail liner in my cart too!

I didn’t do cloth diapers but these wet bags look great! We always have a wet bag handy for pee clothes (when potty training) and wet clothes from the lake, etc. They are super handy!
